The Chief Judge Advocate (CJA) provides administrative assistance to the Judge Advocate General (JAG), exercises powers of the JAG as a delegate and sits as Judge Advocate and Defence Force Magistrate.
The CJA must be a member of the Australian Defence Force who holds a rank not lower than commodore, brigadier or air commodore, must be an enrolled legal practitioner of not less than five years standing and must be a member of the judge advocates' panel appointed by the Chief of the Defence Force or a Service Chief on the nomination of the JAG.
