The Administrative Review Council (ARC) was first established under the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975 as a key element of the administrative review system. In 2015, as part of the Smaller Government reforms, the ARC was discontinued and its functions consolidated into the Attorney-General's Department. The ARC was re-established in 2024 under the Administrative Review Tribunal Act 2024.
The ARC's role is to inquire into and advise on the federal administrative law system, administrative decision-making practices and tribunal practice and procedure. It also promotes knowledge about the administrative law system and facilitates training of decision makers.
The ARC comprises a Chair, members appointed by the Governor-General and ex-officio members. The ex-officio members are the President of the Administrative Review Tribunal, the Commonwealth Ombudsman and the Australian Information Commissioner.
