The Commonwealth car-with-driver service has existed in a number of forms since 1910. COMCAR came into operation in its current form in 1976 when car-with-driver services in the States amalgamated with Ministerial Car Services in Canberra, under the supervision of the then Department of Administrative Services. In 1987, the service was renamed "COMCAR". COMCAR provides services to eligible Australian Government clients, including official guests. COMCAR clients may alternatively choose private sector providers in obtaining car-with-driver services.
