National Maritime Safety Regulator

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), is the National Maritime Safety Regulator and is responsible for the National System for Domestic Commercial Vessel Safety (National System). The National System is designed to provide a single national regulatory framework ensuring the safe operation, design, construction and equipping of domestic commercial vessels in Australian waters. It provides for a national approach allowing operators, seafarers and vessels to move seamlessly between jurisdictions under a reduced regulatory burden and a single national jurisdiction. The National System commenced on 1 July 2013 under the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012, with states and the Northern Territory delivering services as AMSA delegates. On 1 July 2018, AMSA became the sole service provider under the National System, replacing previous state-based service delivery arrangements.
