Established by the Constitution to advise the Governor-General in the government of the Commonwealth.
The activities of the Secretariat are grouped as research and analysis of nominations and committee support, administration of Defence and meritorious service medals, registry of awards and procurement and distribution of insignia and publications.
The position of Official Secretary to the Governor-General was established in 1901. The Governor-General Act 1974 was amended by Parliament in 1984 to establish the position as a statutory office. The Official Secretary and his staff provide the Governor-General with the necessary support to enable Sir Peter Cosgrove to carry out his constitutional, statutory, ceremonial and public duties.
