The International Air Services Commission is an independent statutory authority established under the International Air Services Commission Act 1992 (the IASC Act). The object of the IASC Act is to enhance the welfare of Australians by promoting economic efficiency through competition in the provision of international air services, resulting in:

- increased responsiveness by airlines to the needs of consumers, including an increased range of choices and benefits
- growth in Australian tourism and trade
- the maintenance of Australian carriers capable of competing effectively with the airlines of foreign countries.

The commission's principal function is to make determinations allocating available capacity on a route to one or more carriers, including setting conditions for the use of this capacity. The commission also conducts reviews of those determinations, as well as providing advice to the Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development about any matter referred to it by the Minister concerning international air operations.
